The Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security has today released an inquiry report looking at the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service’s discovery work relating to countering terrorism and violent extremist threats.
The report has found the NZSIS has a carefully constructed approach to assessing extremism and violent extremism threats, and that the NZSIS approach to counter terrorism discovery has developed significantly since 2018 and continues to develop.
Recognising the signs of terrorism and violent extremism early is a strong focus of the NZSIS, and discovery work is a key part of this effort.
The IGIS provides ongoing oversight and transparency to the NZSIS’s mission of maintaining national security, and in doing so helps contribute to public trust and confidence.
The report makes two recommendations around enhancing NZSIS discovery work to more expressly consider the right to freedom of expression is a key part of that. As with all our work, we take any recommendations from the Inspector-General into consideration to improve our practices and have done so here.
