Andrew Hampton is the current Director-General of the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service.

Before joining the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service, Andrew Hampton was Director-General of the Government Communications and Security Bureau (GCSB) for seven years.

Prior to the GCSB, Andrew spent much of his career in the justice sector. He’s helped negotiate Treaty settlements, worked in courts administration, and led significant change programmes. His roles in the justice sector include Director of the Office of Treaty Settlements, Deputy Secretary for Courts, and Deputy Chief Executive at the Crown Law Office.

Andrew was also Deputy Secretary and Director of the Secretary’s Office at the Ministry of Education. As the first Government Chief Talent Officer at the Public Service Commission, Andrew was responsible for identifying talented people in state services and strategically developing their skills and experience.

Andrew has a BA (Hons) and MA (Distinction) in Political Science from the University of Canterbury. He has attended the Oxford Strategic Leadership Programme.

We release our Director-General’s expenses every financial year.

These expenses include:

  • International travel
  • Domestic travel
  • Hospitality and entertainment the Director-General has hosted (including gifts given)
  • Hospitality and entertainment the Director-General has received (including gifts)
  • Taxis (domestic and international)
  • Cell phones.

All amounts in the expenses exclude Goods and Services Tax (GST).
